The Very First Christian Church in Jerusalem
As you watch this, think of the Romans who were searching for Christians in order to kill them, some empaled by spikes and used as torches to light the night along the road, or some torn apart by wild animals in the Roman Games. Others were nailed to crosses along the roads as reminders to those who would want to fight against Rome. Think of Paul meeting here with Peter, James (Jesus’ brother & the Head of the first church), John, Mary (Jesus’ mother), Mary Magdelene, Luke, Mark, Matthew, Philemon, Jude, Titus, Timothy, and the other disciples and followers of Jesus. This is where Paul returned to give the report of his Missionary Journeys to the disciples. There probably was a house of one of the Believers that sat on top of this spot, so as not to be conspicuous and draw attention to the spot. When they gathered together and sang in worship, they had to whisper their songs, so as not to be heard outside. They undoubetedly had their little oil lamps to give them light, as it was always dark in these caverns. No Jewels. No Gold or Silver or precious stones. This is just a humble church where the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples and the followers of Jesus. MUSE on this, awhile.
In this day where Pastors have to have their own Jet Planes to zip across the world, where the sanctuaries are adorned with Gold, Silver and precious stones in massive structures, and the Pastors wearing the finest $1500 suits and $500 shoes, the first Christians came wearing only what they had in order to learn from the Apostles & Missionaries. THIS is the church for whom Paul collected offerings to help them in the famine and persecution. Muse awhile!!!
